Every bookkeeping product now has an AI tab. Intuit calls its features Intuit Intelligence on the QuickBooks pricing page. Xero calls its assistant JAX. Puzzle bundles an "AI Suite." Digits says its books "keep themselves." Booke.ai sells an AI bookkeeper that sits on top of QuickBooks or Xero. The marketing is loud and mostly similar, so this review sticks to what each vendor's own pricing page says, checked on October 20, 2026, and to what kind of business each one fits.

QuickBooks Online
QuickBooks is the default for US small businesses, and most CPAs know it. That matters more than any AI feature: your accountant can open your books on day one without learning a new system. The pricing page lists five plans, from a free single-user plan up to Advanced at $340 a month for 25 users. AI features grow with the plan. Simple Start lists automatic expense categorization and a limited-capacity AI chat in beta. Essentials adds AI-assisted cleanup of books. Plus adds automatic categorization and verification of transactions, AI-generated P&L insights, and anomaly detection.
In July 2025 Intuit announced a set of AI agents for QuickBooks, including an Accounting Agent that "automates bookkeeping and transaction categorization, and assists in reconciliation" and a Payments Agent for invoices and reminders. Intuit's claim that the Payments Agent gets businesses paid five days faster rests on a comparison of its own beta customers from January to August 2024. Read it as a vendor number.
Good fit: most US small businesses, especially if your CPA already works in QuickBooks. Watch: the price steps between tiers are steep, and the AI features you probably want most (verification, anomaly detection) sit on Plus.
Xero
Xero's US list prices run below QuickBooks' paid tiers, and the current promotion makes the first six months nearly free for new customers. The catch on Early is volume: the page lists 20 invoices and 5 bills, and says the invoice limit covers both approving and sending. Most operating businesses will need Growing.
Xero describes JAX as its "AI finance partner." Its July 2026 Xerocon London release says JAX matches transactions to bank feeds automatically, in real time, and describes bill protection (flagging unusual amounts, changed bank details, and unfamiliar suppliers) and payment follow-ups in future tense. Treat those as announced, and check what is live in your region before you count on them.
Good fit: businesses that want a clean ledger at a lower price, and anyone whose accountant prefers Xero. Watch: the Early plan's invoice and bill caps, and the gap between announced and shipped JAX features.
Puzzle
Puzzle positions itself as a QuickBooks replacement (the Core plan is literally labeled that way). It keeps cash and accrual books side by side, which is handy for startups that report to investors on one basis and file on another. The AI features that matter, AI reconciliations and an AI accuracy review, are on Complete at $120 a month. Starter and Core come with 25 lifetime AI credits; Complete includes 100 a month. That credit model is worth understanding before you sign up, because it caps how much you can lean on the AI chat and analysis features.
Puzzle also sells an expert-reviewed service on top of Core, listed at $171 a month for businesses with up to $10,000 in monthly expenses.
Good fit: venture-backed startups with simple operations and a founder who wants burn and runway at a glance. Watch: whether your CPA will work in it, and whether 25 lifetime credits are enough on the lower tiers.
Digits
Digits makes the boldest pitch: "Books that keep themselves." The pricing page lists AI bookkeeping and reconciliation on every plan, a conversational assistant called Ask Digits, an AI Quality Review that checks for errors, and AI Bill Pay and Invoicing. Core, at $100 a month, adds automated schedules that detect transactions needing schedule treatment. The page presents its Agentic Close mainly as a tool for accounting firms. Pro, aimed at businesses with internal finance teams, was marked as coming soon when I checked.
Good fit: small businesses willing to move ledgers to get an AI-first product, ideally with an accounting firm that already uses Digits. Watch: migration cost. Moving ledgers mid-year is real work.
Booke.ai
Booke.ai is different from the rest: it is no ledger at all. It sits on top of QuickBooks or Xero and does the bookkeeper's daily work: categorizing the bank feed, matching documents, requesting missing documents, and running OCR on bills, invoices and receipts, with exception review and an audit trail. The business plan is $129 per business per month. Accounting firms get custom pricing and white-label options.
Good fit: businesses that are happy with QuickBooks or Xero but want the categorization and document chasing done for them. Watch: at $129 a month on top of your ledger, compare it honestly with what a part-time bookkeeper costs you for the same hours.
What none of them will do
Every one of these tools is good at the same thing: sorting bank transactions into accounts and matching them to documents. That is real time saved. None of them will:
- Know that a job finished on the 28th and needs an accrual.
- Decide how to treat a contract with unusual terms.
- Take responsibility for your tax return.
- Catch a categorization rule that a human trained wrong three months ago, unless someone samples the output.
- Tell you when your close is actually done.
When I ran finance at a cultivator, the question I cared about with any system was who would review its output and when. That question has not changed. An AI ledger moves the work from data entry to review. Someone still has to do the review.
How to choose
- Ask your CPA which ledger they work in. Weight that answer heavily.
- If you are already on QuickBooks or Xero and the books are clean, try the AI features on your current plan, or Booke.ai on top, before you migrate.
- If you are starting fresh with simple operations, trial Puzzle or Digits alongside QuickBooks for one month of real transactions.
- Measure one thing: how many transactions you had to correct. That number tells you more than any feature list.
Keep a close process whatever you pick
A new tool does not replace a close routine. The Month-End Close Checklist ($19) is a working Excel workbook with a day-by-day task list from day -3 to day +5, owners, status, a reconciliation tracker, and an "AI can help" column so you can mark which tasks your new tool covers.
If you would rather have this built than build it, Agor AI sets up AR, AP and close automations for small finance teams. See Agor AI. Start with the $250 AI Automation Audit, credited toward a build.
